Diving means traveling for many of us. Except those who work or live near to a great dive site, we all need to travel to some extent. If you take a plane, bus or train to your dream diving destination, you will probably need more than your diving equipment and swimming suit. It is crucial to be prepared well to maximize your comfort and enjoyment, so here is what I have learned when packing for a diving trip:

Start with the Basics

We all know this step. Begin the travel basics like clothes, toiletries, hat and sunscreen, towels, dive equipment etc. In most cases, you will have some kind of a constraint for your luggage (allowance for planes or storage in small spaces like dive boats), so it is always a good idea to prepare a bag that is not too big or bulky. Solid bags may take too much space, so it is preferable to have a bag you can fold when it is empty. No matter the size or shape of the bag, it is always good to be prepared for schedule changes or delays. So, take 1 or 2 extra pieces of shirts or underwear for emergencies. They won't take much space anyway.

Prepare for More

Make sure you check the weather forecast and travel schedules so you can better prepare yourself for the trip. Also, bring spare parts and adaptors for your diving equipment. Most dive operators offer necessary adaptors and you can contact them before leaving to make sure your kit is compatible with their tanks and weights.

Consider Things You May Need on the Boat

For the boat divers, sea sickness pills are necessary, especially if you have experienced sea sickness before or have never been on a boat for hours and don’t have a clue. Also, assume that your stuff can get wet onboard, so having a dry bag for electronics and valuables can be a good idea.

Extras That Can Always Be Handy

I always take extra layers of clothing and socks with me in my diving bag, because sometimes I don’t go to my hotel room to change right after the dives. And you can never know what the temperature will be when you watch the sunset while sipping your favorite drink ;) Also, I never travel without a beanie even if it’s too hot for one. I use it after dives to protect my wet hair from the wind, I ever sleep with one on bus or plane if it is too cold. I also prepare a small first aid kit for emergencies. Online and offline entertainment can be useful if the boat has divers who take different courses or the dive site too remote. Books, magazines and old school playing cards can make your diving day more enjoyable and sociable.

Check and check again

Finally, a checklist can be a lifesaver if you don’t want to memorize these all. I’m a sucker for checklists with a good design. If you are anything like me, you will love our Ultimate Dive Travel Packing List. You can download our free list below:
